Visa Data Shows 20 Percent Increase in Spending from Tourists Visiting US During First Half of 2010
A new report Tourism Outlook: USA from Visa Inc. (NYSE: V) indicates the tourism industry has begun to rebound during the first six months of 2010. From Jan. 1 - June 30, 2010, spending by international tourists to the U.S. on their Visa-branded payment cards was up 20 percent over 2009 levels. At the same time, American tourists are spending at higher levels when traveling internationally: spending by U.S. travelers abroad on Visa cards was up 9.3 percent in the first quarter of 2010 compared to the same period in 2009.
"The United States continues to be a major source market for international tourism and a popular destination for travelers around the globe. The growth in inbound spending in early 2010, particularly from source markets such as China and Brazil, reinforces how Asia-Pacific and South America are seemingly the first to emerge and rebound from the challenging environment that defined 2008 and 2009," said Bill Sheedy, president, North America, Visa Inc.
In 2009, spending by international visitors declined 12 percent from $32.9 billion in 2008 to $28.9 billion based on a challenging socio-economic environment.
Tourism Impact: The Gulf Region Oil Spill
Visa is actively working with tourism operators and organizations across the Gulf Coast region to provide spending data and insights that will help them evaluate the short-and long-term impacts of the recent oil spill crisis.
While the oil spill did not result in an immediate impact in the weeks following the spill - May Visa transaction data reveals tourism spending was up over 2009 levels - tourism sharply declined in June 2010. June spending decreased 42 percent compared to May 2010, and also declined 9 percent year-over-year.
All four states along the Gulf Coast saw declines in tourism spending from May to June: Alabama (8 percent), Florida (35 percent), Louisiana (65 percent) and Mississippi (65 percent).
Lodging and oil and gas are the two merchant segments hardest hit by the crisis. Visa transaction volume in the lodging segment decreased 50 percent, while the oil and gas segment was down 42 percent. According to a recent survey by the Knowland Group survey of hotel properties, 35 percent said that the oil spill has prompted guests to cancel their future reservations and 42 percent said the spill has hurt their ability to book future events.
As the United States tourism industry works to continue the upward trajectory seen during the first six months of 2010 and navigate challenges such as the recent oil spill, Visa is committed to supporting the growth of its industry and government partners by providing a secure and reliable digital currency for cross-border transactions and access to millions of cardholders globally. Traffic decline continued in March
“Largely everywhere in Europe, the major airports we normally compare ourselves with recorded similar declines in passenger numbers. It is still too early to say anything about when the decline will stop, but travel agencies and airlines indicate that ticket sales for the summer holiday period look reasonable, said Carsten Nørland, Director of Aviation, Copenhagen Airports A/S.
International traffic was down by 282,307 passengers or 17.3%, whereas domestic traffic increased by 1.1%. However, the increase in domestic traffic may be the result of a very low level of domestic traffic in March 2008 due to the Easter period.

Lloyd Jordan Named Partner at Holland&Knight Law Firm
Holland&Knight LLP the 5th largest law firm in America with 1300 lawyers named Lloyd Jordan to full partnership in the firm. Jordan has been with the firm for five years after serving as an administrator in Washington, D.C. Lloyd is the former Chief of Staff for former Mayor Freeman Bosley, Jr.
Holland&Knight is a global law firm with 26 U.S. offices. Internationally Holland&Knight has offices around the world located in Mexico City, Tokyo and Beijing, Helsinki, Caracas and Tel Aviv. Holland&Knight is among the world’s 15 largest firms, providing representation in litigation, business, governmental law, real estate and private-wealth services.
Lloyd still maintains his residence in St. Louis and commutes weekly to his Holland&Knight’s office in Washington, D.C. “When people see me in grocery stores or events in St. Louis they always ask, when did you get back or they say how long are you visiting, and I tell them I am here at least 50% of the time, I just make a longer commute than other people, Jordan said. “You will be surprised the number of people who commute weekly to Washington, DC, the airplane resembles a bus with St. Louis people traveling to work, I see at least 25-35 people commuting to Washington each week.
At Holland&Knight, Lloyd is a member of the Government Section were he practices in the area of public law focusing on federal appropriations and state&local governments. “I represent several cities, Birmingham, Charlotte and Kansas City, to name a few, said Jordan. “I work with the city’s mayors and city councils to them develop strategic plans and programs and thereafter I interact with Congress or other Federal Government agencies to get the city’s plans and programs funded.
Lloyd credits the time he spent as the chief of staff in St. Louis for identifying for his skill in being able help cities improve their management and service delivery to citizens. “I thoroughly enjoy this work and being in Washington has help me to learn so much. Although during the Bosley administration we accomplished a lot, I wish I knew what I know now about making a city work,Jordan said. During Bosley’s administration the city improved its credit rating, developed the plans for a lot of the new housing happening in the neighborhoods and downtown, managed a major natural disaster without lose of life, created the plan for the revitalization of Forest Park, baled TWA airlines out of bankruptcy and brought the Rams football team to St. Louis.
“Yeah we were able to do a lot, but now I know how to get the fed’s to help a city. Many cities rely on their Congressional delegation to do the work for them but that is not a key to success. Unless a Congressman or Senator is chairman of a committee there is not much they can do,said Jordan. “My firm has been able to get cities 1/10 of the size of St. Louis more money than the amount gotten by St. Louis. We have gotten over $1 Billion in federal appropriates for our clients.Holland&Knight is ranked by Influence Magazine in the top 10 of federal lobbyist.
Getting money for cities is not all that Lloyd does for his clients. He works closely with the city leaders to help solve problems of the city ranging from economic development to crime reduction. Lloyd has many believers in his ability to help. “I cannot tell how much help he has been for Birmingham, said Mayor Bernard Kincaid, who is in his second four-year term. “Lloyd is like a member of the City’s executive team, he goes beyond what typical lobbyist do, he takes a personal interest in helping in the management of the city, continued Mayor Kincaid.
Lloyd first started working in Washington, DC when he was hired by the federal government’s oversight authority to help with making the District of Columbia government more effective and financially solvent. Lloyd reviewed and made recommendations on how the government could be managed better. “I reviewed and helped to implement major changes to numerous departments like health, public works, human services, property management and regulatory affairs,Jordan said. When Mayor Anthony Williams became Mayor he asked Lloyd to come work for him and to help him transform Washington. “It was very exciting time, I am so proud of the work Mayor William’s team did in such a short time,Jordan continued. “I was charged with turning around one of the Department of Regulatory Affairs.
According to the Washington Business Journal, Jordan is credited with turning around one of the nations worst operations and causing it to be ranked “best in the nation.Jordan humbly acknowledged this accomplishment and added, “Yeah we did a lot and won a lot of awards from many different organizations. People came from all over to learn had we made such a big transformation, we even had people from China and Australia to meet with us.One of Jordan’s responsibilities was being the administrator of all building and land development in Washington. “It is great to see the revitalization of Washington and to know that you played a part of the transformation.$6.5 Billion of development projects came through Jordan’s department during his tenure. Lloyd also served on the Mayor’s Economic Development Taskforce, Technology Taskforce and Regulatory Reform Taskforce. He is presently a member of the DC Sports Commission that was responsible for winning the relocation of the Montreal Expos to Washington.
In his spare time Lloyd travels the country as a public speaker. He has spoken in at least 38 cities. “I have been in four cities in one weekend several times. I have been blessed to have people wanting to hear what I have to say about the social issues of our times. I have also spoken on operational management for several business groups,Lloyd said. Lloyd has been selected by Ebony Magazine at least four times as one of the 00 Most Influential African Americans. He has been awarded the keys to 17 cities and made an honorary Kentucky Colonel and a Indiana Hoosier. “It funny, I have spoken coast to coast but not in St. Louis, oh well.Jordan joked.

Home Truths about Your Subway|beijing travel
In a bustling metropolis like Beijing, the subway plays an important role in everyday life. Like an old friend, it takes us to work, back home and to our many playgrounds. So when a series of humorous cartoons was released that interpreted the characteristics of seven Beijing Subway lines, they became the talk of the town.
Line 1
Bai Wenjing, 26, architect
I've been in Beijing for more than a month and Line 1 is my primary choice of transport. I use it every weekend to visit my friends and see the city. I was told how awful it is that you have to squeeze to get in, but I find it OK, except for the rides back home in the evenings: hot and crowded. The cartoon is good and accurate.
Describe the line in one sentence: It's convenient and joins many must-see places.
Line 4
Yue Zhengnan, 18, high school student
I use Line 4 every day for school. It has enough trains, and it's not crowded. The stations are also different from other lines, although the signs for interchanges are not clear and are a bit confusing. However, it connects many significant landmarks, which is amazing. The cartoon is really interesting.
Describe the line in one sentence: It's comfortable because it has plenty of trains and few passengers.
Line 5
Li Peng, 28, civil servant
I ride Line 5 every day, to work and home. I have a car but seldom drive. I leave home at 6 am to avoid the rush. I don't know how it can be improved; maybe an extra line would ease the pressure. If you ride the subway, you need to expect cramped conditions. The good thing is, the trains are always on time.
Describe the line in one sentence: It's crowded because it's one of the busiest lines in the capital.
Line 8
Shi Xiuli, 49, laboratory technician
I take the line a lot during the week. I like it. It's not crowded, so offers a moment of relief before I have to transfer to another line. The line reflects the city's metropolitan charm. The only problem is you have to wait longer for trains at night. The cartoon is adorable.
Describe the line in one sentence: It's comfortable and environmentally friendly.
Line 10
Carmen Halford, 23, US intern
I use the line eight times a week to get to work. It's really crowded. I wouldn't be able to suggest how to improve things. The best thing about it is that it connects places like Chaoyang district with Renmin University of China and Wudaokou. I was pleased to see the guy in the cartoon looks annoyed, though.
Describe the line in one sentence: Too many people
License Plate Winners Delay Purchases|beijing travel
Li Chenguang does not rush decisions like buying a new car. After being named a winner in the capital's so-called license-plate lottery, he has spent months researching makes and models.
It seems he is not the only one. According to official statistics cited by Beijing media, as of July 1 just 35 percent of all 600,000 people who have received registrations since the first draw in January have gone on to purchase vehicles.
One transport expert argues the proportion is so small that stricter rules are needed to prevent winners wasting the chance to buy a car.
"I'm not anxious to buy a car, because I didn't consider the car's color and type much before the lottery," Li said on Wednesday. "I wouldn't think about a car if I didn't have the opportunity to buy one. I'm also waiting for a fall in prices."
The 24-year-old telecom company employee, who got his license plate in May, added that some of his friends also only chose their car's make and model after winning the lottery.
Winners have six months to buy a car and activate their licenses. Yet, as the first batch of successful entrants approaches the deadline, almost 80 percent still have not signed on the dotted line, according to data in Beijing Daily attributed to city authorities.
Wang Limei, secretary-general of China Road Transport Association, an influential NGO, said this kind of behavior could reduce the chances of people who may desperately need to buy a vehicle.
In an interview with Beijing News she called for the municipal government to shorten the time winners have to buy from six months to one. Those who fail to buy should be banned from entering the lottery for two years, she added.
Li agreed with the proposal for a two-year restriction, but did not agree that the buying time be limited to one month.
"It isn't reasonable, because the buying procedures won't be finished during that period, and people can't choose a better car in such a short time," he added.
However, unsuccessful entrants complained about behavior like Li's and said they hoped those restrictions will be put in place.
A woman surnamed Sang, 40, who did not want to be identified, said her application in March for a license plate had failed, and she thought residents who won but did not buy cars should be penalized.
"They wasted other participants' time and opportunities. It is unfair for residents like me," she said in support of Wang's suggestion.
"Traffic authorities should improve regulations for car buyers quickly and I will follow the news about car purchases in the future."
Subway Crowds Get Crush Warning|beijing travel
BEIJING - In a move that is perhaps stating the obvious, a busy subway station on the Batong Line has put up signs to warn passengers when its platforms are most crowded.
Tongzhoubeiyuan station, a major commuter hub, has posted 10 large blue notices outside entrances that grade passenger flow between 6:30 am and 9:30 am, from average to very crowded.
Staff members said the move is aimed at encouraging people to avoid the station during its busiest period, 7:30 am to 9:30 am.
If successful, the signs will be rolled out at stations along the line, which runs from the eastern suburbs of Tongzhou district to downtown Chaoyang district.
"The notice is mainly aimed at passengers in a hurry who arrive in advance and can use other means of transport," said Gao Chunling, director of Tongzhoubeiyuan station, which limits entry to passengers at peak times.
She added the grading is based on "long time observation and experience".
However, passengers traveling through Tongzhoubeiyuan on Monday seemed less than impressed with the effort.
"No matter how crowded it is, I still have to ride the train to work and try all means to avoid being late," said Deng Wenjun, who rides Batong Line every day. She added that if managers want to alleviate congestion they should shorten the intervals between trains.
Batong Line has seen a steady increase in passenger volume since it opened in 2003, mainly because of the relatively cheap real estate prices along the line, said Gao. It is now one of Beijing's most crowded subway lines, while Tongzhoubeiyuan is among its busiest stations.
"Commuters make roughly 300,000 journeys on the line every day," said Liu Xiaoming, director of Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport during an interview with Beijing Public Service Radio.
Gao said crowding at the station has been greatly alleviated in recent months with the opening of several new bus transit lines.
"We used to receive 1,900 to 2,000 passengers during morning rush hour. Now the figure is only 800 to 1,000," she said.

Ancient town escapes citys pace of life|china travel
With Beijing now fully enveloped in autumn, the weather is cooling off and the TV is going on. For some people though, the prospect of four months of hibernation does little to excite, which is where Yanchi town strikes a note.
The air is clean, the sky is crystal blue and visitors will feel like they have left the concrete jungle thousands of kilometers behind, when in fact they are only 70 km west of central Beijing.
The town, situated in Mentougou district, is a tourist resort in the making. Although the end goal is to bring in the crowds, as of yet, this destination is largely unknown.
After alighting from the bus, visitors will immediately notice the lush-green mountains that surround them. An untainted azure sky drifts overhead and everywhere hangs the rich smells of nature.
Nature is certainly the dominant force here, though clusters of farmyards that date back hundreds of years do something to prove man's strong will to cohabit.
One of the villages nearby, Weizishui, is a must-see. Nestled among mountains, the community is a postcard picture.
According to officials, Weizishui is home to a large number of ancient buildings, many of which remain intact.
"These village houses are living history," said Wang Guogang, director of the organization and publicity department in Yanchi town.
He said most ancient houses are still inhabited, largely as a result of restoration work that adopts authentic reconstruction techniques.
"The buildings are precious cultural relics," Wang said. "When we repair or renovate them, we make sure their basic architectural features are preserved."
The tourist spot is surrounded by mountains. Photos by Zhang Wen / for China DailyThe tiled roofs might give an impression of ancient China, but the solar panels resting on them quickly bring visitors back to present day.
But modern technology only leaves a small mark on the area, a passing moment when set against the area's chief landmark - an ancient pagoda tree.
The trunk is so large that hugging it will require at least five people to join hands. Though inside it is naturally hollow, locals have stuffed the tree to bolster the community's protector.
The village also distinguishes itself by having 72 ancient wells. In ancient times, each household had its own. While modernity has now replaced them with indoor plumbing, they are nonetheless preserved and honored as forms of cultural heritage.
After walking across the landscape, visitors might start to feel the bite of hunger. To appease their cravings, there is an abundance of countryside hotels, located in farmyards.
Chefs serve up local cuisine using a range of vegetables that include the leaves and shoots of a tree called the Chinese toon. Yanchi prides itself on growing red-tipped toon, rather than the regular green species, which was once served exclusively at the dinner tables of Chinese emperors.
Prices are reasonable, with an average meal costing between 20 and 30 yuan per person. One reason for this is that the local government supports farmers on the edge of Beijing to earn more by keeping these hotels free of tax.
The cheap rates also extend to accommodation - staying the night costs about 20 yuan per person.
So, for anyone longing to get closer to nature after a stressful week in the concrete jungle, Yanchi is a solid choice while the weather holds. Crowds are small and so too is the expense, but the area is steeped in rich and abundant history.

Lantern Festival brings village together|china travel
On the evening before the Lantern Festival, the residents of the Gaobeidian village, just inside Beijing's 5th ring road, gathered by the river for their own celebration of the holiday.

The public park along the southern bank of the Tonghui River was lit up with lanterns of every shape and size, including stars, rabbits, and fruit. The majority of hundreds of lanterns on display were hand-made by residents of the village, creating a community atmosphere for the celebration.
Despite the chilly night air, turnout was impressive: most villagers seemed to be there, along with several Chinese journalists. A lone German tourist stood out among the crowd.

On the sidewalk, a stand selling lamb kebabs could barely keep up with the crowd, while other visitors perused painted clay figurines and traditional-style rabbits for sale by another vendor.
The constant chatter of villagers enjoying an evening out was only silenced by the main attraction: performances by two groups of villagers.
The largest and loudest performance belonged to the village's drummers, which consisted of several dozen residents in bright costumes performing traditional sets on drums and cymbals. Performers ranged in age from teenagers to the elderly, and the group has also performed at other festivals outside Gaobeidian. One older woman, surnamed Sai, said they've been practicing for this performance for 2 months, but she's been playing cymbals with the group for nearly 2 years, "It's good for my health, but I think that it's good to connect with others from my village."
The other performers were a big hit that is, much taller than the average person. About 15 performers, dressed in traditional makeup and costumes, performed dances on stilts for a captivated crowd. Performing alongside his mother and father, the youngest of the group looked to be in his early teens.

After the performances came to an end, a banner containing slips of paper with Chinese riddles were hung above an eager crowd. Visitors fought against the crowd to grab a riddle, but then turned back to their neighbors for help solving the puzzles. Correct answers were rewarded with a small prize.
As with any spring celebration in China, the night finished off with some fireworks.
This is the 6th year the village has held a Lantern Festival celebration. "We hold these events to remind people of the rich cultural past of the village," says Gaobeidian village head Zhi Fen.
Gaobeidian is an ancient village that has been absorbed into the expansion of Beijing's sprawling metropolis. While the city's expansion has offered Gaobeidian new opportunities for business and tourism, the village strives to retain its folk characteristics and sense of community.
The lantern festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the first lunar month, on the evening of the first full moon of the new year and marks the end of the New Year celebrations.

Alaska Airlines Resumes Flights In And Out Of Anchorage After Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport Reopens
Alaska Airlines' first flight to Anchorage is scheduled to depart Seattle at 7 p.m. and arrive at 9:53 p.m. local time. Flights out of Anchorage were expected to begin about 4 p.m. local time. The airline will continue to operate its normal schedule as long as conditions permit. Flight departure information will be posted at alaskaair.com.
"We apologize for the inconvenience to our customers, but their safety is always our highest priority," said Ben Minicucci, Alaska Airlines' chief operating officer and executive vice president of operations. "Although we are resuming operations in Anchorage, we're monitoring the ash situation at the airport very closely. If the ash poses a hazard again, we will halt our operations there."
Alaska Airlines canceled 45 flights to and within the state of Alaska on Sunday. Since Mount Redoubt began erupting Sunday, March 22, the airline has canceled about 230 flights affecting more than 10,000 passengers.
Travelers are advised to check the status of their flights before going to the airport at alaskaair.com or by calling 1-800-ALASKAAIR (1-800-252-7522). The airline recommends that standby travelers do not return to the airports in Seattle and Anchorage on Sunday night as it is very unlikely they can be accommodated due to fully booked flights. Specific information about flight changes related to the Mount Redoubt volcano is available at alaskaair.com.
Ticketed passengers who are affected by Mount Redoubt eruptions and scheduled for travel March 28 through March 29, 2009, will be allowed changes without penalty if their new travel is on or before April 5, 2009. A full refund will also be offered for any unused portion of the ticket.

Rural retreat|china travel
Moganshan, once a resort for the rich and the royal, now welcomes a new breed of tourists who seek a country escape.[China Daily]
The rustic nature of the environment is carefully preserved at Moganshan.[China Daily]
As people seek to get away from the big city helter-skelter, vacation spots in the country are mushrooming. Xu Junqian finds one quiet refuge in Moganshan, in Deqing county.
It is verdant country laced with soothing streams and blanketed in evergreen trees and bamboos. Moganshan used to be a favorite summer retreat for the rich and royal of Shanghai in the past, and a sprawl of villas varying in style from medieval castles to country manors equipped with tennis courts, swimming pools and indoor ballrooms testify to that era of grand living.
Wealthy merchants and traders from The Bund created a holiday paradise for themselves at Moganshan, just 200 kilometers away from Shanghai and 60 km away from Hangzhou.
Now, a different breed of professionals and expatriates from big cities in the surrounding hinterland is re-discovering the pleasures of the countryside there.
In fact, some have actually invested in this new opportunity.
As our car crawls up the winding mountain road up Moganshan, it is easy to spot eight red-brick farmhouses among the hundreds of others that dot the rolling hillside.
This is the 395 Village resort, and the gravel path leading to the farmhouses is marked by a sign enlivened with colorful images of workers in the early revolutionary style.
The access is neatly maintained and free of plastic bottles or other holiday debris left by careless visitors. The front yard, too, is blessedly free of the vulgar statues and faux rock formations that adorn so many public areas throughout Zhejiang.
The only structure of note in this small open area is the wash basin, converted from a feed trough for livestock.
This is the work of Grant Horsfield, who took pains to maintain the rustic nature of the environment when he began work in 2007 remodeling these farmhouses into bungalows equipped with modern facilities.
"I fell in love with the area on my first visit that year and made up my mind to build a holiday resort," said the former management consultant from South Africa. Together with his two partners, Horsfield spent $1 million to lease eight of the 18 original farmhouses in the village, which got its name from the fact that it was home to only three families of nine people at one time.
Now, it is a holiday complex, renamed Naked Retreat, that can accommodate a total of 30 guests.
Business has been brisk. In the peak season, usually during the long breaks on Labor Day, National Day and the Spring Festival, bookings are required one to two months ahead.
More than 10,000 visitors have stayed at the resort since its opening in late 2007, and the occupation rate has been around 50 percent on average.
In the first two years, nearly 90 percent of guests were expatriates from neighboring Shanghai, but there is a growing number of young Chinese tourists, and Horsfield expects this group to represent half the occupancy rate soon.
The amenities of Naked Retreat seem bare.
Air-conditioning, deemed harmful to the environment, is banned and guests are kept cool with fans in summer. Most of the furniture is largely made from recycled material and all household fabrics are of cotton.
"We want to bring nature to urbanites from cities like Shanghai. It will help them relax, get refreshed, and hopefully, take up an eco-friendly lifestyle," Horsfield says.
Leisure in this nature resort doesn't come cheap. The average charge ranges from 500 yuan to 1,000 yuan per person, depending on season. This doesn't include meals, which guests can order from the cooks recruited from the neighboring villages.
"Basically, Moganshan has become an all-year-round retreat spot for urbanites," said Ji Huibin, vice director of the communication department of Deqing county.
"Some city people flock to Moganshan in the winter months simply to see the snow," he added.
Such enthusiasm has lured thousands of local farmers into the "agritainment" industry, as they call it. Many are simply opening up their newly refurbished and modernized homes. Some empty-nesters are simply renting out the spare bedrooms left by their children, who have gone to the big cities to make more money.
For them, it's like having paying guests at home to whom they can offer accommodation and meals - typical home-cooked country fare with ingredients that come straight from the vegetable patches and the hen coop in the backyard.
The county government estimates that there are currently about 1,500 beds provided by 108 agritainment families at Moganshan. More than 1,200 people, mostly farmers, are working in the business, accounting for 10 percent of the population of the less-than-100-square-kilometer mountainous area.
The numbers do not include "part-timers" with a regular job in town, who are more than willing to open their homes to make some spare cash when their neighbors are overloaded with visitors during peak holiday periods.
The demand is there, nationwide.
According to Horsfield, his company plans to open another three Naked resorts in some of the best locations in China to expand their green business.
The latest is Naked Stable, a 20-minute car drive away from the village, a more high-end facility which offers horseback-riding and conference amenities. It cost 200 million yuan to build and is expected to be in operation late this year.
Another two, still in blueprint stage, are to be located at Shangri-La in Yunnan and the Zhoushan Islands in Zhejiang.

Where the spirit of Feng Zikai resides|china travel
With laundry hanging over the bushes, flowers blooming in the corner and neighbors chatting in the sun, the Chang Le Cun courtyard looks much the same as other communities in downtown Shanghai.
There's nothing to suggest it is the former residence of a renowned man of letters.
Feng Zikai (1898-1975), pioneering cartoonist, essayist and translator, spent the last 21 years of his life in one of its Spanish-style houses.
Born in Tongxiang prefecture, Zhejiang province, Feng was a disciple of Li Shutong, an accomplished scholar who later became a Buddhist master.
In 1921, he traveled to Japan to further his studies. After returning to China, he taught art and music in Shanghai and Chongqing, and became an editor with the Kaiming Publishing House in Shanghai.
Of Feng's numerous creations, his most famous are short essays and cartoons, used as illustrations for primary school textbooks.
The garden served as the German Expats' Country Club when first built in the 1900s. The French later bought it and renamed it "Verdun Garden", and it became a landmark of the French concession.
The garden has original Spanish architectural features, although most of the faded walls are covered in thick vines.
When Feng settled in Shanghai in 1954, he bought a house here and named it Riyuelou, or Tower of the Sun and the Moon, as he could observe the night sky from a small window in the attic of the third floor. It was here that Feng completed the last four volumes of his six-volume anthology of paintings, in memory of his mentor Li Shutong.
The first floor of the house was taken over by the government during the "cultural revolution" (1966-76) and Feng family members gradually moved out after he died in 1975.
The Tower of the Sun and the Moon later housed five families until 2008, when Feng's descendents spent 3.5 million yuan ($533,000) to obtain the use of the second and third floors. The first floor is still occupied by another family.
The renovated second and third floors are now the Feng Zikai Studies Center, displaying the scholar's works and collections.
Despite its narrow space, the peppermint-and-vanilla rooms house a fine collection of paintings, calligraphy works, essays and poems.
Some of the original objects Feng used are now back where they belonged, including a small wooden-framed bed.
On the tables are piles of palm-sized paper, pens and brushes for visitors to leave their messages and sketches. Tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world have left messages complimenting Feng's paintings, essays and translation works.
"I read Feng's essays and enjoyed his comics when I was a little girl, and my excitement at finding his former residence is beyond words," Liu Suyin, 72, says.
Barely a stone's throw away lies South Shaanxi Road, one of the busiest streets in Shanghai. The scenes that Feng once witnessed have now been replaced by boutiques, shopping malls and dashing cars. Only a small sign with the three characters, "Chang Le Cun" written by Feng Zikai at the exit of the garden reminds visitors of the long gone past.
