Visa Data Shows 20 Percent Increase in Spending from Tourists Visiting US During First Half of 2010

San Francisco, CA August 31, 2010

A new report Tourism Outlook: USA from Visa Inc. (NYSE: V) indicates the tourism industry has begun to rebound during the first six months of 2010. From Jan. 1 - June 30, 2010, spending by international tourists to the U.S. on their Visa-branded payment cards was up 20 percent over 2009 levels. At the same time, American tourists are spending at higher levels when traveling internationally: spending by U.S. travelers abroad on Visa cards was up 9.3 percent in the first quarter of 2010 compared to the same period in 2009.

"The United States continues to be a major source market for international tourism and a popular destination for travelers around the globe. The growth in inbound spending in early 2010, particularly from source markets such as China and Brazil, reinforces how Asia-Pacific and South America are seemingly the first to emerge and rebound from the challenging environment that defined 2008 and 2009," said Bill Sheedy, president, North America, Visa Inc.

In 2009, spending by international visitors declined 12 percent from $32.9 billion in 2008 to $28.9 billion based on a challenging socio-economic environment.

Tourism Impact: The Gulf Region Oil Spill
Visa is actively working with tourism operators and organizations across the Gulf Coast region to provide spending data and insights that will help them evaluate the short-and long-term impacts of the recent oil spill crisis.

While the oil spill did not result in an immediate impact in the weeks following the spill - May Visa transaction data reveals tourism spending was up over 2009 levels - tourism sharply declined in June 2010. June spending decreased 42 percent compared to May 2010, and also declined 9 percent year-over-year.

All four states along the Gulf Coast saw declines in tourism spending from May to June: Alabama (8 percent), Florida (35 percent), Louisiana (65 percent) and Mississippi (65 percent).

Lodging and oil and gas are the two merchant segments hardest hit by the crisis. Visa transaction volume in the lodging segment decreased 50 percent, while the oil and gas segment was down 42 percent. According to a recent survey by the Knowland Group survey of hotel properties, 35 percent said that the oil spill has prompted guests to cancel their future reservations and 42 percent said the spill has hurt their ability to book future events.

As the United States tourism industry works to continue the upward trajectory seen during the first six months of 2010 and navigate challenges such as the recent oil spill, Visa is committed to supporting the growth of its industry and government partners by providing a secure and reliable digital currency for cross-border transactions and access to millions of cardholders globally. WorldRemit Now Offers Money Transfers from Canada to Zimbabwe

March 31, 2011

WorldRemit, an award-winning money transfer business, has now launched its service in Canada. Well received by Zimbabweans in the UK where it was launched earlier this year, the service offers customers the ability to send money safely from the comfort of their own home to family and friends in Zimbabwe.

The new service enables customers to send money from the privacy and convenience of their own home, at any time of day or night, using a variety of payment methods including debit and credit cards. All they require is internet access. There is no longer the need to take time off and travel to an agent location.

One of the problems recipients have often faced in Zimbabwe has been availability of US dollars. In partnership with Barnfords Global&Financial Services, WorldRemit guarantees availability of US dollars at all pay-out locations. As soon as a transaction is processed, the recipient gets an SMS on their mobile phone notifying them that they can collect the cash at any of the Barnfords pay-out agent locations.

The ability to pay online and use of text messaging makes the whole process very convenient for both senders and recipients.

WorldRemit currently offers money transfer online to 25 countries and all website transactions are secured using the highest level of online security.

Traffic decline continued in March

In March, 1,515,726 passengers travelled through Copenhagen Airport. This was 280,423 or 15.6% fewer passengers than in the same month of last year. This continued the trend of significantly fewer passengers seen in the first couple of months of 2009.

“Largely everywhere in Europe, the major airports we normally compare ourselves with recorded similar declines in passenger numbers. It is still too early to say anything about when the decline will stop, but travel agencies and airlines indicate that ticket sales for the summer holiday period look reasonable, said Carsten Nørland, Director of Aviation, Copenhagen Airports A/S.

International traffic was down by 282,307 passengers or 17.3%, whereas domestic traffic increased by 1.1%. However, the increase in domestic traffic may be the result of a very low level of domestic traffic in March 2008 due to the Easter period.

Lloyd Jordan Named Partner at Holland&Knight Law Firm

Decatur, GA January 6, 2006

Holland&Knight LLP the 5th largest law firm in America with 1300 lawyers named Lloyd Jordan to full partnership in the firm. Jordan has been with the firm for five years after serving as an administrator in Washington, D.C. Lloyd is the former Chief of Staff for former Mayor Freeman Bosley, Jr.

Holland&Knight is a global law firm with 26 U.S. offices. Internationally Holland&Knight has offices around the world located in Mexico City, Tokyo and Beijing, Helsinki, Caracas and Tel Aviv. Holland&Knight is among the world’s 15 largest firms, providing representation in litigation, business, governmental law, real estate and private-wealth services.

Lloyd still maintains his residence in St. Louis and commutes weekly to his Holland&Knight’s office in Washington, D.C. “When people see me in grocery stores or events in St. Louis they always ask, when did you get back or they say how long are you visiting, and I tell them I am here at least 50% of the time, I just make a longer commute than other people, Jordan said. “You will be surprised the number of people who commute weekly to Washington, DC, the airplane resembles a bus with St. Louis people traveling to work, I see at least 25-35 people commuting to Washington each week.

At Holland&Knight, Lloyd is a member of the Government Section were he practices in the area of public law focusing on federal appropriations and state&local governments. “I represent several cities, Birmingham, Charlotte and Kansas City, to name a few, said Jordan. “I work with the city’s mayors and city councils to them develop strategic plans and programs and thereafter I interact with Congress or other Federal Government agencies to get the city’s plans and programs funded.

Lloyd credits the time he spent as the chief of staff in St. Louis for identifying for his skill in being able help cities improve their management and service delivery to citizens. “I thoroughly enjoy this work and being in Washington has help me to learn so much. Although during the Bosley administration we accomplished a lot, I wish I knew what I know now about making a city work,Jordan said. During Bosley’s administration the city improved its credit rating, developed the plans for a lot of the new housing happening in the neighborhoods and downtown, managed a major natural disaster without lose of life, created the plan for the revitalization of Forest Park, baled TWA airlines out of bankruptcy and brought the Rams football team to St. Louis.

“Yeah we were able to do a lot, but now I know how to get the fed’s to help a city. Many cities rely on their Congressional delegation to do the work for them but that is not a key to success. Unless a Congressman or Senator is chairman of a committee there is not much they can do,said Jordan. “My firm has been able to get cities 1/10 of the size of St. Louis more money than the amount gotten by St. Louis. We have gotten over $1 Billion in federal appropriates for our clients.Holland&Knight is ranked by Influence Magazine in the top 10 of federal lobbyist.

Getting money for cities is not all that Lloyd does for his clients. He works closely with the city leaders to help solve problems of the city ranging from economic development to crime reduction. Lloyd has many believers in his ability to help. “I cannot tell how much help he has been for Birmingham, said Mayor Bernard Kincaid, who is in his second four-year term. “Lloyd is like a member of the City’s executive team, he goes beyond what typical lobbyist do, he takes a personal interest in helping in the management of the city, continued Mayor Kincaid.

Lloyd first started working in Washington, DC when he was hired by the federal government’s oversight authority to help with making the District of Columbia government more effective and financially solvent. Lloyd reviewed and made recommendations on how the government could be managed better. “I reviewed and helped to implement major changes to numerous departments like health, public works, human services, property management and regulatory affairs,Jordan said. When Mayor Anthony Williams became Mayor he asked Lloyd to come work for him and to help him transform Washington. “It was very exciting time, I am so proud of the work Mayor William’s team did in such a short time,Jordan continued. “I was charged with turning around one of the Department of Regulatory Affairs.

According to the Washington Business Journal, Jordan is credited with turning around one of the nations worst operations and causing it to be ranked “best in the nation.Jordan humbly acknowledged this accomplishment and added, “Yeah we did a lot and won a lot of awards from many different organizations. People came from all over to learn had we made such a big transformation, we even had people from China and Australia to meet with us.One of Jordan’s responsibilities was being the administrator of all building and land development in Washington. “It is great to see the revitalization of Washington and to know that you played a part of the transformation.$6.5 Billion of development projects came through Jordan’s department during his tenure. Lloyd also served on the Mayor’s Economic Development Taskforce, Technology Taskforce and Regulatory Reform Taskforce. He is presently a member of the DC Sports Commission that was responsible for winning the relocation of the Montreal Expos to Washington.

In his spare time Lloyd travels the country as a public speaker. He has spoken in at least 38 cities. “I have been in four cities in one weekend several times. I have been blessed to have people wanting to hear what I have to say about the social issues of our times. I have also spoken on operational management for several business groups,Lloyd said. Lloyd has been selected by Ebony Magazine at least four times as one of the 00 Most Influential African Americans. He has been awarded the keys to 17 cities and made an honorary Kentucky Colonel and a Indiana Hoosier. “It funny, I have spoken coast to coast but not in St. Louis, oh well.Jordan joked.

Lloyd said, “With this article maybe my St. Louis friends will know that I am still around.

Emirates airlines Lands at ITB to Reaffirm Commitment to Travel Industry

10th March 2009 - Emirates has moved to stabilise some of the turbulence around the travel industry by standing firm in its support for ITB, the worlds largest travel trade show. A long-established participant at the International Tourism Bourse, which runs March 11th-15th, the airline has returned with its giant, rotating Emirates Globe stand, demonstrating its global appeal. Buzzing with exhibitors from 180 countries, such as hotels, tourist boards, tour operators, carriers and travel agents, ITB has come a long way since 1966, when just five overseas countries participated - Brazil, Egypt, the Federal Republic of Germany, Guinea and Iraq. Nabil Sultan, Emirates Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations, Europe, said: ITB is an important driving force for the travel industry and it is important that Emirates should attend and support the show, particularly during these testing times. This is a good opportunity to get together with contacts, business partners and speak to the world from our spectacular Emirates Globe in one of our key markets. Mr Sultan added: While the travel industry may have slowed, Emirates continues to push ahead, with the key word for this year being consolidation. We are taking a forensic approach to pricing to make sure that our products and services have maximum appeal at a time when we appreciate that our customers are increasingly cost-conscious. The giant 9.5 metre high stand, with its 65-metre circumference, had its European debut at ITB last year. The structure has the capacity to slowly rotate 360 degrees every 30 minutes, a real head turning feature for curious exhibition goers. Primarily, the stand will showcase Emirates Hotels and Resorts. Room set ups on the ground floor whisk you away to Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa, which this year is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Another display features the Wolgan Valley Resort & Spa, also a conservation-based resort, set to open this October in Australias Blue Mountains. The first floor provides spacious areas for business meetings, private conference rooms and catering facilities. The top floor provides a large VIP area and majlis for hosting guests. On the fringes of the stand, visitors will be able to sample the exquisite First Class Suites onboard Emirates (available on the latest Emirates 777-200 and 777-300ER and A380 aircraft) in a specially recreated cabin area. An array of audio and visual displays supplement this gigantic exhibit, the result of 22,000 hours of exhaustive creative and technical work. Dr. Christian Goeke, Chief Operating Officer for the organisers, Messe Berlin, said: “We consider it to be an impressive indication of commitment and faith in ITB Berlin and its international importance within the industry, that a globally-active company such as Emirates has continued, over many years, to choose Germany and Berlin as the location for its largest trade-fair presence outside its home market Last week, Emirates announced plans to bring 2,000 travel agents, tour operators and MICE agents from around the world to Dubai on a series of 3-day familiarisation trips, as part of a Keep Discovering Dubai campaign. Working in conjunction with DTCM, hoteliers and DMCs, the AED 50 million campaign will take place throughout March, April and May and showcase Dubai’s accessibility, infrastructure and range of amenities. Around 300 international media representatives will also take part. Home Truths about Your Subway|beijing travel

In a bustling metropolis like Beijing, the subway plays an important role in everyday life. Like an old friend, it takes us to work, back home and to our many playgrounds. So when a series of humorous cartoons was released that interpreted the characteristics of seven Beijing Subway lines, they became the talk of the town.

  Line 1

  Bai Wenjing, 26, architect

I've been in Beijing for more than a month and Line 1 is my primary choice of transport. I use it every weekend to visit my friends and see the city. I was told how awful it is that you have to squeeze to get in, but I find it OK, except for the rides back home in the evenings: hot and crowded. The cartoon is good and accurate.

Describe the line in one sentence: It's convenient and joins many must-see places.

  Line 4

Yue Zhengnan, 18, high school student

I use Line 4 every day for school. It has enough trains, and it's not crowded. The stations are also different from other lines, although the signs for interchanges are not clear and are a bit confusing. However, it connects many significant landmarks, which is amazing. The cartoon is really interesting.

Describe the line in one sentence: It's comfortable because it has plenty of trains and few passengers.

  Line 5

  Li Peng, 28, civil servant

I ride Line 5 every day, to work and home. I have a car but seldom drive. I leave home at 6 am to avoid the rush. I don't know how it can be improved; maybe an extra line would ease the pressure. If you ride the subway, you need to expect cramped conditions. The good thing is, the trains are always on time.

Describe the line in one sentence: It's crowded because it's one of the busiest lines in the capital.

  Line 8

  Shi Xiuli, 49, laboratory technician

I take the line a lot during the week. I like it. It's not crowded, so offers a moment of relief before I have to transfer to another line. The line reflects the city's metropolitan charm. The only problem is you have to wait longer for trains at night. The cartoon is adorable.

Describe the line in one sentence: It's comfortable and environmentally friendly.

  Line 10

  Carmen Halford, 23, US intern

I use the line eight times a week to get to work. It's really crowded. I wouldn't be able to suggest how to improve things. The best thing about it is that it connects places like Chaoyang district with Renmin University of China and Wudaokou. I was pleased to see the guy in the cartoon looks annoyed, though.

Describe the line in one sentence: Too many people

License Plate Winners Delay Purchases|beijing travel

Li Chenguang does not rush decisions like buying a new car. After being named a winner in the capital's so-called license-plate lottery, he has spent months researching makes and models.

It seems he is not the only one. According to official statistics cited by Beijing media, as of July 1 just 35 percent of all 600,000 people who have received registrations since the first draw in January have gone on to purchase vehicles.

One transport expert argues the proportion is so small that stricter rules are needed to prevent winners wasting the chance to buy a car.

"I'm not anxious to buy a car, because I didn't consider the car's color and type much before the lottery," Li said on Wednesday. "I wouldn't think about a car if I didn't have the opportunity to buy one. I'm also waiting for a fall in prices."

The 24-year-old telecom company employee, who got his license plate in May, added that some of his friends also only chose their car's make and model after winning the lottery.

Winners have six months to buy a car and activate their licenses. Yet, as the first batch of successful entrants approaches the deadline, almost 80 percent still have not signed on the dotted line, according to data in Beijing Daily attributed to city authorities.

Wang Limei, secretary-general of China Road Transport Association, an influential NGO, said this kind of behavior could reduce the chances of people who may desperately need to buy a vehicle.

In an interview with Beijing News she called for the municipal government to shorten the time winners have to buy from six months to one. Those who fail to buy should be banned from entering the lottery for two years, she added.

Li agreed with the proposal for a two-year restriction, but did not agree that the buying time be limited to one month.

"It isn't reasonable, because the buying procedures won't be finished during that period, and people can't choose a better car in such a short time," he added.

However, unsuccessful entrants complained about behavior like Li's and said they hoped those restrictions will be put in place.

A woman surnamed Sang, 40, who did not want to be identified, said her application in March for a license plate had failed, and she thought residents who won but did not buy cars should be penalized.

"They wasted other participants' time and opportunities. It is unfair for residents like me," she said in support of Wang's suggestion.

"Traffic authorities should improve regulations for car buyers quickly and I will follow the news about car purchases in the future."

Subway Crowds Get Crush Warning|beijing travel

BEIJING - In a move that is perhaps stating the obvious, a busy subway station on the Batong Line has put up signs to warn passengers when its platforms are most crowded.

Tongzhoubeiyuan station, a major commuter hub, has posted 10 large blue notices outside entrances that grade passenger flow between 6:30 am and 9:30 am, from average to very crowded.

Staff members said the move is aimed at encouraging people to avoid the station during its busiest period, 7:30 am to 9:30 am.

If successful, the signs will be rolled out at stations along the line, which runs from the eastern suburbs of Tongzhou district to downtown Chaoyang district.

"The notice is mainly aimed at passengers in a hurry who arrive in advance and can use other means of transport," said Gao Chunling, director of Tongzhoubeiyuan station, which limits entry to passengers at peak times.

She added the grading is based on "long time observation and experience".

However, passengers traveling through Tongzhoubeiyuan on Monday seemed less than impressed with the effort.

"No matter how crowded it is, I still have to ride the train to work and try all means to avoid being late," said Deng Wenjun, who rides Batong Line every day. She added that if managers want to alleviate congestion they should shorten the intervals between trains.

Batong Line has seen a steady increase in passenger volume since it opened in 2003, mainly because of the relatively cheap real estate prices along the line, said Gao. It is now one of Beijing's most crowded subway lines, while Tongzhoubeiyuan is among its busiest stations.

"Commuters make roughly 300,000 journeys on the line every day," said Liu Xiaoming, director of Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport during an interview with Beijing Public Service Radio.

Gao said crowding at the station has been greatly alleviated in recent months with the opening of several new bus transit lines.

"We used to receive 1,900 to 2,000 passengers during morning rush hour. Now the figure is only 800 to 1,000," she said.

Emirates A380 comes full circle and heads to France

29th December 2009 - An Emirates A380 left Dubai this morning, bound for France and the home of its manufacturer, Airbus, as double-decker flights got underway to Paris. The French capital is the latest destination to be served by the airlines much admired super-jumbo - after Toronto, London Heathrow, Seoul, Bangkok, Sydney, Auckland, and Jeddah from 1st February. Salem Obaidalla, Emirates Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations, Europe & the Russian Federation, said: The superjumbo will gradually replace the morning 777 service out of Dubai, becoming daily from 17th January. The demand for Emirates services on this route has always been extremely high and it is fitting that one of our Airbus A380s is being deployed to serve France, the headquarters of Airbus, and from where the A380 story unfolded. For us, the A380 has come full circle and what a wonderful way this is to end 2009. Mr Obaidalla added: Our sales remain very strong in and out of Paris Charles de Gaulle and our 7th A380 will bring some of the much needed capacity to the route. We also expect the larger aircraft to further stimulate trade between the UAE and France. UAE-France bilateral trade is worth billions of US dollars each year. While French investment in the UAE has traditionally focused on oil and gas, free trade zones have attracted companies such as LOreal, Chanel and Schneider. Food, automotive parts, furniture and interior design products also make up part of the trade picture. France became part of the airlines European network in 1992. Nineteen weekly passengers flights into the country are made up of a double daily service to Paris and five flights into Nice, becoming daily this Friday. The 489-seat superjumbo will initially replace EK 073 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. The flight leaves Dubai at 0800hrs and arrives in Paris at 1225hrs. The return flight, EK 074, leaves Charles De Gaulle at 1430hrs and gets into Dubai at 2359hrs. As before, the second flight of the day, EK 075, departs Dubai at 1500hrs and arrives in the French capital at 1930hrs. Heading back, EK 076 takes off from CDG at 2105hrs and lands in Dubai at 0635hrs the following day. The Emirates A380, much of it French built, has been the talk of the industry since its introduction to the airlines fleet in July 2008. For a giant of the skies, it is surprisingly quiet, has a vastly reduced noise footprint and uses the very latest fuel-efficient technology. Before premium passengers even board, they can enjoy the airlines dedicated luxury lounges in Paris and Dubais Terminal 3, the envy of the worlds airline community. Inside the peerless First Class cabin, passengers can freshen up in one of the Onboard Shower Spas before joining other premium passengers to talk business and travel in the Onboard Lounge. This outstanding facility is permanently staffed by highly trained cabin crew and fully equipped with complimentary beverages and canapés. It opens when the aircraft reaches cruising altitude and doesn’t close until descent. The A380 presents a completely different experience for Economy passengers too. More roomy cabins, more space between seats, and of course, the customary top-notch cuisine, along with the enthralling ice in-flight entertainment system. Emirates and Airbus Emirates is the largest A380 customer with seven double-deckers already in the fleet and a further 51 on order Emirates was the first airline to order the A380 and has ordered more than any other carrier Emirates represents 30 per cent of the total orders received by Airbus for the superjumbo Emirates now has 54 Airbus aircraft flying - A380s (7), 330-200s (29), 340-300s (8), and 340-500s (10) The airline has 122 Airbus aircraft on order, a combination of A350-900s, A350-1000s and A380s - worth more than USD 35 billion (AED 132 billion). Emirates A380 Overall length - 73 metres Height - 24.1 metres Wing span - 79.8 metres Fuselage diameter - 7.14 metres The A380 burns up to 20 per cent less fuel per seat than today’s next largest aircraft The Emirates A380 uses the Engine Alliance GP7200, which will save a further 500,000 litres of fuel per aircraft per year compared to other engine alternatives The A380 generates less than half the noise of a Boeing 747-400 on take off The UAE and France (Source: French Embassy, Abu Dhabi) The United Arab Emirates is Frances largest market in the Middle East The UAE makes up 25 percent of French exports to the Middle East 250 subsidiaries of French companies present in the UAE Tourism arrivals from France to Dubai grew by 27% in 2008 10,000 French settled in the Emirates.

Ancient town escapes citys pace of life|china travel

Two men, dressed in traditional opera costumes, stand in front of a row of ancient houses. Photos by Zhang Wen / for China Daily Yanchi town is a quiet place to experience history. Photos by Zhang Wen / for China Daily

With Beijing now fully enveloped in autumn, the weather is cooling off and the TV is going on. For some people though, the prospect of four months of hibernation does little to excite, which is where Yanchi town strikes a note.

The air is clean, the sky is crystal blue and visitors will feel like they have left the concrete jungle thousands of kilometers behind, when in fact they are only 70 km west of central Beijing.

The town, situated in Mentougou district, is a tourist resort in the making. Although the end goal is to bring in the crowds, as of yet, this destination is largely unknown.

After alighting from the bus, visitors will immediately notice the lush-green mountains that surround them. An untainted azure sky drifts overhead and everywhere hangs the rich smells of nature.

Nature is certainly the dominant force here, though clusters of farmyards that date back hundreds of years do something to prove man's strong will to cohabit.

One of the villages nearby, Weizishui, is a must-see. Nestled among mountains, the community is a postcard picture.

According to officials, Weizishui is home to a large number of ancient buildings, many of which remain intact.

"These village houses are living history," said Wang Guogang, director of the organization and publicity department in Yanchi town.

He said most ancient houses are still inhabited, largely as a result of restoration work that adopts authentic reconstruction techniques.

"The buildings are precious cultural relics," Wang said. "When we repair or renovate them, we make sure their basic architectural features are preserved."

The tourist spot is surrounded by mountains. Photos by Zhang Wen / for China Daily

The tiled roofs might give an impression of ancient China, but the solar panels resting on them quickly bring visitors back to present day.

But modern technology only leaves a small mark on the area, a passing moment when set against the area's chief landmark - an ancient pagoda tree.

The trunk is so large that hugging it will require at least five people to join hands. Though inside it is naturally hollow, locals have stuffed the tree to bolster the community's protector.

The village also distinguishes itself by having 72 ancient wells. In ancient times, each household had its own. While modernity has now replaced them with indoor plumbing, they are nonetheless preserved and honored as forms of cultural heritage.

After walking across the landscape, visitors might start to feel the bite of hunger. To appease their cravings, there is an abundance of countryside hotels, located in farmyards.

Chefs serve up local cuisine using a range of vegetables that include the leaves and shoots of a tree called the Chinese toon. Yanchi prides itself on growing red-tipped toon, rather than the regular green species, which was once served exclusively at the dinner tables of Chinese emperors.

Prices are reasonable, with an average meal costing between 20 and 30 yuan per person. One reason for this is that the local government supports farmers on the edge of Beijing to earn more by keeping these hotels free of tax.

The cheap rates also extend to accommodation - staying the night costs about 20 yuan per person.

So, for anyone longing to get closer to nature after a stressful week in the concrete jungle, Yanchi is a solid choice while the weather holds. Crowds are small and so too is the expense, but the area is steeped in rich and abundant history.

Lantern Festival brings village together|china travel

On the evening before the Lantern Festival, the residents of the Gaobeidian village, just inside Beijing's 5th ring road, gathered by the river for their own celebration of the holiday.

The public park along the southern bank of the Tonghui River was lit up with lanterns of every shape and size, including stars, rabbits, and fruit. The majority of hundreds of lanterns on display were hand-made by residents of the village, creating a community atmosphere for the celebration.

Despite the chilly night air, turnout was impressive: most villagers seemed to be there, along with several Chinese journalists. A lone German tourist stood out among the crowd.

On the sidewalk, a stand selling lamb kebabs could barely keep up with the crowd, while other visitors perused painted clay figurines and traditional-style rabbits for sale by another vendor.

The constant chatter of villagers enjoying an evening out was only silenced by the main attraction: performances by two groups of villagers.

The largest and loudest performance belonged to the village's drummers, which consisted of several dozen residents in bright costumes performing traditional sets on drums and cymbals. Performers ranged in age from teenagers to the elderly, and the group has also performed at other festivals outside Gaobeidian. One older woman, surnamed Sai, said they've been practicing for this performance for 2 months, but she's been playing cymbals with the group for nearly 2 years, "It's good for my health, but I think that it's good to connect with others from my village."

The other performers were a big hit that is, much taller than the average person. About 15 performers, dressed in traditional makeup and costumes, performed dances on stilts for a captivated crowd. Performing alongside his mother and father, the youngest of the group looked to be in his early teens.

After the performances came to an end, a banner containing slips of paper with Chinese riddles were hung above an eager crowd. Visitors fought against the crowd to grab a riddle, but then turned back to their neighbors for help solving the puzzles. Correct answers were rewarded with a small prize.

As with any spring celebration in China, the night finished off with some fireworks.

This is the 6th year the village has held a Lantern Festival celebration. "We hold these events to remind people of the rich cultural past of the village," says Gaobeidian village head Zhi Fen.

Gaobeidian is an ancient village that has been absorbed into the expansion of Beijing's sprawling metropolis. While the city's expansion has offered Gaobeidian new opportunities for business and tourism, the village strives to retain its folk characteristics and sense of community.

The lantern festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the first lunar month, on the evening of the first full moon of the new year and marks the end of the New Year celebrations.

Alaska Airlines Resumes Flights In And Out Of Anchorage After Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport Reopens

Alaska Airlines (IATA CODE AS) resumed flights in and out of Anchorage late Sunday afternoon after Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport reopened for operations. The airport had been closed since Saturday evening because of volcanic ash on runways and surrounding areas that posed a significant risk to operating aircraft.

Alaska Airlines' first flight to Anchorage is scheduled to depart Seattle at 7 p.m. and arrive at 9:53 p.m. local time. Flights out of Anchorage were expected to begin about 4 p.m. local time. The airline will continue to operate its normal schedule as long as conditions permit. Flight departure information will be posted at alaskaair.com.

"We apologize for the inconvenience to our customers, but their safety is always our highest priority," said Ben Minicucci, Alaska Airlines' chief operating officer and executive vice president of operations. "Although we are resuming operations in Anchorage, we're monitoring the ash situation at the airport very closely. If the ash poses a hazard again, we will halt our operations there."

Alaska Airlines canceled 45 flights to and within the state of Alaska on Sunday. Since Mount Redoubt began erupting Sunday, March 22, the airline has canceled about 230 flights affecting more than 10,000 passengers.

Travelers are advised to check the status of their flights before going to the airport at alaskaair.com or by calling 1-800-ALASKAAIR (1-800-252-7522). The airline recommends that standby travelers do not return to the airports in Seattle and Anchorage on Sunday night as it is very unlikely they can be accommodated due to fully booked flights. Specific information about flight changes related to the Mount Redoubt volcano is available at alaskaair.com.

Ticketed passengers who are affected by Mount Redoubt eruptions and scheduled for travel March 28 through March 29, 2009, will be allowed changes without penalty if their new travel is on or before April 5, 2009. A full refund will also be offered for any unused portion of the ticket.

Emirates marks World Book Day by taking passengers on a literary journey

4th March, 2010: To celebrate World Book Day, Emirates took thousands of travellers on a literary journey by orchestrating a mass book sharing initiative across its global network of more than 100 destinations. Lucky passengers on board every Emirates flight departing the airline’s Dubai hub today were presented a novel as part of the annual drive to encourage the joy of reading and promote literacy. Cabin crew were integral to the operation, with more than 1000 of them arriving for duty with a stack of books written by authors who are part of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, running from 10th to 13th March. Starting with the one am flight to Bahrain, they distributed books on more than 150 aircraft, until the last flight to depart Dubai on World Book Day a Boeing 777 to Bangkok at 11pm. Cabin crew also had the honour of telling passengers about the Emirates Literary Journey, explaining to readers that they were just taking the book on the first leg of its trip, and that they should pass it on to friend, family member, colleague or even a stranger in a café or metro station. Instructions are also printed on the inside cover of each book, which includes a table for each reader to fill in the details which will track each stage of the book’s ongoing journey, such as their name, and where and when they picked it up and then handed it on. In addition, each book has an individual serial number and readers are encouraged to log on to the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature website - emirateslitfest.com/literaryjourney - to share their views on the initiative, as well as comments on the novel they read. Terry Daly Emirates Divisional Senior Vice President, Service Delivery oversaw the complex plan which will see both Arabic and English-language authors reaching new audiences across the world. He said: “It is incredible to think that our cabin crew today will be spreading the joy of reading to every corner of the globe. Emirates is proud that - through our staff - the World Book Day message of promoting literacy and the joy of reading will be delivered to almost 60 different countries. More than 20 titles by leading international authors such as Kate Mosse and R.J Ellory, as well as top regional writers like Bahaa Taher and Maha Gargash - were also distributed at 26 Emirates lounges across the world, while many customers at Costa Coffee shops throughout Dubai also received a copy. In addition, novels were given to guests at the Emirates Group’s eco-friendly conservation-based destinations - Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa in Dubai and Wolgan Valley Resort & Spa in Australia - while there will be some unexpected half-time reading material for lucky football and rugby fans attending forthcoming Arsenal and Emirates Western Force matches. The celebration of books will continue next week when the 2010 Emirates Airline Festival of Literature running from Wednesday until Saturday - gets under way at the InterContinental Hotel, Dubai Festival City. And festival director Isobel Abulhoul is delighted readers across the world are already taking part in the event being held under the patronage of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. She said: “One of our main objectives in setting up the festival has been to encourage as many people as possible to experience the joy of the written word in all its forms. What better way to do this than with a global book drop. “The thought that people - from Los Angeles to Tokyo to Sydney - will have the opportunity to participate in our festival via Emirates global reach is truly exciting and inspiring. This is exactly what the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature is supposed to be about. The publishing community has been generous in its support of the initiative and together with Emirates - donated the collection of titles, many of which are bestsellers or have won awards. Afridi to star in amateur side at Emirates Airline Twenty20

DUBAI, U.A.E.,16th February 2010: Shahid Afridi the talismanic all-rounder who inspired Pakistan’s World Twenty20 victory in London last year has signed up to play in the inaugural Emirates Airline Twenty20. In an amazing coup, Fly Emirates XI a team of amateurs who juggle cricket with busy jobs at the Emirates Group - have recruited the 29-year-old in a bid to claim a shock victory against the professional teams they will be facing in the two-day festival of cricket on 19th and 20th March. Afridi will be lining up alongside Emirates employees including four who are also members of the UAE team which reached the last four of the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers - as they attempt to upset the odds against some of South Africa and England’s most talented Twenty20 players. He said: “It is going to be a tough challenge, but I am looking forward to it immensely. I always enjoy my time in Dubai and am very excited about playing in the first ever Emirates Airline Twenty20 tournament. “I know there is a real passion among cricket fans in the UAE and it will be great to play in front of them. It is a dream come true for Fly Emirates XI skipper Nigel Fernandes, who is delighted his team will get the opportunity to learn from one of the game’s most gifted players. “I can’t believe that Shahid Afridi will be playing for us, said the 32-year-old batsman from India, who works as an Airport Services Supervisor at the Emirates Group. “He is among the best players in the world at the moment and to have him alongside us will give us great confidence. Afridi will be the star attraction at the event, but the Cape Cobras the reigning Twenty20 champions of South Africa featuring experienced players and emerging stars will also have a strong following, while fans of the English County game won’t be disappointed. Sussex are England’s Twenty20 Cup holders and NatWest Pro40 champions and, with England players Monty Panesar, Ed Joyce and James Kirtley in their ranks, they should also prove popular with spectators, who will be able to take part in a number of fun activities planned by Arabian Cricket Challenge (ARCH), the event organisers. The four-team line-up is completed by Surrey Lions with England stars Mark Ramprakash, Steven Davies and Chris Tremlett expected to be competing at 7he Sevens, Emirates dedicated sporting facility, which is set to unveil a new cricket pavilion and pitches ahead of the tournament. Maurice Flanagan, Executive Vice Chairman, Emirates Airline & Group, is a keen follower of cricket and is delighted that the Fly Emirates XI will get the chance to play with Afridi. He said: “We are excited that he has agreed to play for us. It will be a wonderful experience for our players to learn from a world-class player. Emirates is committed to the growth of cricket - both in the UAE and around the world and it is a great pleasure to be able provide cricket fans here the chance to see one of the game’s most entertaining players in action. Tournament director and ARCH founder Matthew Jackson said: “It is great to have Afridi on board. He is a thrilling player to watch and plays in a style which sums up the festival spirit we aim to create. In addition to the Emirates Airline Twenty20, ARCH will be hosting the Emirates Airline Forty40, featuring Surrey and Sussex and two other English County clubs, in the week following the Twenty20 event. The development of grassroots cricket is a key objective of both ARCH and Emirates and they will also be running the Emirates Airline ARCH Trophy for schools, which will feature under-19 pupils from the UAE, New Zealand and the UK. Emirates takes the title for top consumer website

11th February 2010: Emirates.com has come out on top in a global survey rating the usability of the world’s leading airline websites. Ranked first against a tough field in the ‘Global-Local Monitor survey, Emirates global websites were assessed for how well they had been localised or adapted to the country’s language and culture by the User Experience Alliance (UXalliance), a global network of leading user research firms. Over 70 experienced professionals from 17 countries across Asia, Europe and the Americas examined ten leading airline websites for compatibility to their local markets. Five expert representatives from each country took into account the proper use of local languages, character sets and culturally sensitive imagery on each of the sites. Emirates currently has 96 localized websites in 13 languages, representing the broad mix of destinations that the airline serves. People around the world are becoming increasingly reliant on the internet to assist them in the completion of everyday tasks, including the booking and management of international and regional travel. In line with this growing trend Emirates has invested heavily in its IT infrastructure. “We have a highly skilled and dedicated team supporting our online properties and we continue to look for ways to enhance each site’s usability. Our online bookings continue to grow exponentially each year and our online communications have become an extremely important sales tool. It is important for global companies like Emirates to produce collateral that directly reaches our target markets and we are confident that emirates.com is a true reflection of our inter-cultural mentality, added Boutros. The new Emirates website was launched on 12th December 2007.
